HOW SHOULD YOUR WEDDING DJ HANDLE SONG REQUESTS FROM GUESTS?
YES, YOUR DJ SHOULD BE ABLE TO HANDLE SONG REQUESTS
“Do you take song requests?”
This is a very common question we’re asked by couples when we’re in the final meeting before their wedding.
The simple answer is YES. We will 100% take song requests from guests but here’s some food for thought.
This is YOUR wedding. Most of the time, when a couple books us, it’s because the DJ and music is a very important aspect to them. That being said, we want to handle song requests according to what the couple’s expectations are.
When we’re going over music choices before a wedding, there are a few lists we try to get the couple to engage with us on. The two primary lists are the “MUST PLAY” and the “MUST NOT PLAY” lists.
Simply put, we want to know what songs you love and what you hate. We also want to know if there are broad genres of music that you absolutely love and also what you despise. We then start to curate our music for the wedding based around these recommendations. We’re also here to give music suggestions and to guide couple’s through the process.
At most weddings the age range and diversity of guests is all over the place. Grandma’s are mixed with 30 something’s and teenage niece’s are mixed with older cousins. Curating music for a wedding is tricky because you need to keep all guests in mind but also first and foremost, what the couples desire.
If Uncle Ted keeps asking us to play “Free Bird” but the couple has specifically asked us for no classic rock, we will kindly explain to Uncle Ted that we were asked by the couple to steer away from classic rock.
It’s really that simple. We welcome requests from wedding guests but your guests should also take into consideration that it’s YOUR big day.
At the end of the day, the couple is our boss and is paying us to do a job. We will do everything in our power to follow the musical blueprint laid out for us by them and give them exactly what they’re looking for.
